Santa Catalina Island, eastern most of the Channel Islands, is about 29 miles off Long Beach on the California coast.
It's only a relatively short boat ride to the hillside harbor town of Avalon... and a whole different world.
Local kids and visitors swim out to meet the boat and bob for tossed coins... I tried it myself on one trip.

My first trip "26 Miles across the sea" (The Four Preps-1957) to Catalina Island was in 1958 when I went with a youth group from my church.
My second trip was to accompany a couple of my friends who went to visit some girls that were vacationing there with their parents.
As it happened, I met a sweet young girl, Ann Moore, who was staying with the group and, needless to say, I had a great time.

Many years later, in 1984, with this memory in mind, as a best man for a friend's wedding, I needed to plan a bachelor party.
Since both my friend and I were not "party" types, but loved both the beach and volleyball, I designed a bachelor trip to Catalina where we could have both...

On the island, I met this sweet young lady, Ann Moore, Catalina Island, California, 1966.
Looking back at these photos taken in a photo booth, I remember I not only got a sun tan, but had a great time goofing around with Ann.
